Gem of the Ocean Filed Trip

Set in 1904, "Gem" begins the chronology of August Wilsons unprecedented "Pittsburgh Cycle" dramatizing the African American experience during the 20th century. The play focuses on the busy household of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old seer with a reputation for spirit-cleansing magical powers. She welcomes into her Hill District home Solly Two Kings, a former slave and veteran of the Underground Railroad who must return to the South to save his sister, and Citizen Barlow, a young fugitive whom Ester guides on a mystical journey toward healing his guilt over a crime he has committed. Not only does this powerful play illuminate how blacks were still enslaved forty years after the Emancipation Proclamation, it also speaks to race relations, resilience and the power of faith.
