We Iare honored that you have chosen to entrust your child's education with us here at East Gadsden High School. The purpose of all of our courses is to provide instruction that enables your child to function at his or her highest level and to participate effectively at home and in the community. To that end, we place emphasis on skills that are used in daily life; therefore, some of our skills are practiced off-campus. This method of instruction is called Community Based Instruction (CBI) and provides students the opportunity to practice skills ranging from street safety to shopping. This year students receive instruction in seven courses in addition to Specially Designed Physical Education with Ms. Gail Gholson. The courses and examples of skills taught are: Academic Skills - identify community signs through words or pictures, time and money concepts Communication Skills - following directions, emergency phone use, expressing opinions, vocabulary and current events Personal and Home Living Skills - simple food preparation, housekeeping, personal care (hygiene and grooming), citizenship (2 blocks of instruction) Community and Social Skills - Seeking assistance, responding to criticism, social and behavioral expectations, safety Leisure and Recreation Skills - Management of unstructured time, game rules, activities in art and entertainment Career Preparation Skills - completing tasks to specifications, identifying and demonstrating qualities desired in good citizens and employees, problem solving Since the majority of our work involves hands - on activities, the customary supplies of paper, pens, and pencils are not required; we provide the supplies when needed. For our Community Based Instruction, signed permission to leave campus and emergency information/contacts are required. Occasionally, we may request $2 - $3 for students to practice shopping or fast food restaurant skills. Grades for students are based on their individual effort and ability. To encourage students towards self - direction, extra credit is given for offering assistance to others, for initiating tasks, and for problem solving/trouble shooting. We welcome your calls, visits, suggestions, and active participation in your child's education. Respectfully, Lynn Clark and Patricia Jackson
